Re: "Cash or grass... nobody plays for free," July 6.
Really folks, don't you have anything more important to do this summer than complain about uncut park grass! As usual Sandra Thomas has missed the point or told a very bad joke.
The park board justification of saving money is a poor one. A better one would be saving precious water, since longer grass retains moisture and therefore requires less water. Longer grass is also more natural, lush and inviting.
Two-thirds of the grass at Trout Lake is groomed, leaving plenty of space for the Special Olympics group. How about one of the locked baseball diamonds? And what possible purpose does too-short grass serve at Jericho Park?
The park board should also rethink its existing practise of watering in the heat of the day when flowers burn and the field water simply evaporates. If any city department should be the "keeper of green," the park board would be the one.
We have so groomed and sanitized the planet that it is dying before our eyes.
