Re: "12th & Cambie: Parking problems," Feb. 29.
Courier reporter Mike Howell suggests that residents of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»are becoming habitual law violators when it comes to parking.
One hundred thousand tickets are ignored or disputed and the number is probably even larger if one includes those who voluntarily pay merely for convenience reasons.
There may be another explanation for parking violations. It may be that the infractions are the result of too restricted parking time, not enough parking space, unclear instructions, ambiguous regulations, regulations not explained in the ICBC learning material, fragmented regulations within the city, regulations not harmonized between municipalities and overzealous parking enforcers.
I have witnessed a parking enforcer issuing a ticket while using an electronic distance meter to measure 5.5 metres distance from the sidewalk where six metres is allowed.
The local government seems to be more concerned about how to make ticket collections more efficient rather than to address the parking problem. I feel there is something dishonest about the rule-makers.
