Re: "Police chief to Canucks fans: 'Don't come downtown,'" March 23.

I would like to provide further context for my remarks. During the March 21st police board meeting, and in response to board member questions, I provided a lengthy answer talking about past riots in B.C., the recent riot in London, Ont., the deterrence provided by the criminal charges laid by the Integrated Riot Investigation Team, and the philosophy of having neighbourhood-based celebrations and creating an environment downtown where hooligans are not welcome and less able to engage in criminal acts.

It was in this context that I made the comment that those who want to engage in public drinking, hooliganism and criminal behaviour are not welcome in Vancouver. For those who are not in these categories, I would like to extend a warm VPD welcome to come to enjoy our bars, restaurants, arenas, theatres, shopping and street ambience.

Jim Chu, Chief Constable
