Last week I wrote in my Central Park column that I’ve embarked on a journey to get healthier and more fit this year with the help of and Darnelle Moore, co-owner of the new studio on Fraser Street at East 42nd Avenue.
Kamachi, a registered holistic nutritionist is offering the out of Eastside Fitness. And Moore is my former fitness instructor from the I attended at the now defunct Riley Park Community Centre. So I’m in good hands.
I started with Kamachi three weeks ago and I meet with her once a week to go over my progress and get weighed. (I lost three pounds last week.)
Each week Kamachi gives me information on healthy eating and to date we’ve covered complex carbohydrates, mindful eating, stabilizing blood sugar, reading food labels and my big one, chronic stress and its affects on weight loss. We also go for a long, brisk walk after each meeting, which ramps up my enthusiasm and gets me motivated for the upcoming week. As well, my partner and I have started walking three times a week, no matter what the weather.
I wrote in Central Park that I’d be attending my first boot camp class at Eastside Fitness last Friday and despite the fact I started coming down with a terrible cold and felt like you know what, I made it. I have to admit it was tough, probably made tougher by the fact I could barely breath due to my cold, but I couldn’t wimp out of my first class because I’d be forced to confess that here. (That’s one of the reasons I’m writing about my efforts on my blog.)
So there I was Friday morning doing double lunges, sumo squats and bicep curls. One of the first things I noticed was that my balance, which had much improved while attending Healthiest Winner classes, was off. So improving my balance is another goal I’ll be working on this winter and coming spring.
Meanwhile, I’ve come up with a diet tip of my own. I’ve started volunteering to be the designated driver whenever we go out to socialize. It not only makes me popular, but I save calories from not drinking. It’s also easier to make the right food choices when we’re out because I haven’t had a glass of wine or two.
