A Canada Post truck driver was hospitalized after ice from the George Massey Tunnel crashed through the vehicle's windshield Friday afternoon.

The driver, a 49-year-old man from Surrey, was taken to a local hospital by BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS).

Just before 2 p.m., BCEHS and the BC RCMP were notifed of a vehicle incident on the Richmond side of the George Massey Tunnel where ice fell from the beams smashed through the windshield and injuring the driver.

Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene with one person sent to the hospital in serious condition, said Sarah Morris, media relations with the BCEHS.

Sgt. Janelle Shoihet of the BC RCMP said they are "continuing to investigate in an attempt to determine the source of the ice."

The incident caused major delays for commuters travelling southbound on Highway 99 through Richmond, but lanes have since been re-opened.

BC RCMP is asking for any witnesses or dashcam footages of the incident to contact Lower Mainland Traffic Services at 604-526-9744 file number 2020-108.
