Vancouverites Jenny Lehmann and Zach Garland on Saturday won, respectively, the womens and mens Giro, the elite competition linked to the RBC Gran Fondo, set on a spectacular, 120-kilometre race course with a 2-km elevation gain from Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»to Whistler.
Lehmann and Garland are roommates and each takes home $3,000 prize money.
Lehmann, 24, was the fastest woman with a time of three hours and 51 minutes.
Garland, 25, clocked in the fastest time of 3:17.
It was just phenomenal. A euphoric feeling," said Garland, a Newfoundlander who relocated to Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»in April. "It was good. It was a hard ride. I rode the last 17 or 18 km by myself and that's the hardest part."
He said the hardest stretch was entering the final hills leading into Whistler.
More to come.
