Man steals bus, goes on joyride in Surrey: Transit police

A man was arrested early Thursday morning afterÌýallegedly stealing a bus in SurreyÌýand taking it for a drive.Ìý

Sgt. Clint Hampton, media spokesperson with Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­Transit Police, told Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ in an email that theÌýbus operator for the N19 night bus was on a break when the incident took place.Ìý

"This occurred early this morning around 2 a.m.," writes Hampton.

"A bus operator for the N19Ìýnight busÌýwas taking a washroom break. The bus was left running and a man boarded and stole the bus."

Hampton notes that there were no other passengers on the bus, andÌýthatÌýGPS was used to findÌýits location. Once it was found, he reports that the bus was stoppedÌýat Fraser Highway and 176th Street.Ìý

"With the assistance of the Surrey RCMP, the suspect was arrested. The suspect, a 28-year-old man, was held in custody."

Hampton adds that transit policeÌýwill be forwarding a charge of theft of a motor vehicle over $5,000.
