Boston Bruins fans are feeling antsy. The Stanley Cup will be in town Sunday in the hands of Milan Lucic, but unless they're close friends or family, those supporters will be hard-pressed to congratulate the East Side skater or get close to the Cup. The behaviour of a few egotistical, thin-skinned, immature and-above all else, in my opinion-embarrassed Canucks fans has caused the Lucic family to err on the side of caution. An alleged scuffle at a street fair and defaced posters have them feeling uneasy. They are planning a private affair. somewhere in the Lower Mainland.
Smelling the metallic odour of silver and nickel alloy and feeling the Earth tilt as the weighty hardware approaches the Pacific Coast, Bruins fans in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»are homing in like trained pigeons. One father wrote to ask if the Cup would be on public display so he and his daughter could blink in the light that reflects off the engraved letters marking Bruins victories.
An Abbotsford man wrote to ask if I could relay his message to the Lucic clan. "I would love to share in the celebration," he confessed. "I am quite disappointed to hear that Lucic won't be able to share his special day with the public. The Lucic family deserves to have their day however they choose. I just wish I could be there!"
Milan Lucic does deserve the day he chooses. He deserves public recognition of his success. That the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»family feels at times uncomfortable in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»is beyond wretched for them, for hockey fans and for Canucks supporters capable of good sportsmanship.
