Jock and Jill: Fans taste Lions pride with football club's signature sauce

Silly seasonal marketing unnecessary for B.C. Lions new branded barbecue sauce and marinade

Like burgers and beer, wine and cheese or a Caesar with scrambled eggs on Sunday afternoon, a good barbecue goes best with a boozy marinade.

This could be the subscript for the B.C. Lions who, on Wednesday, announced the launch of a signature barbecue sauce made with the finest silver tequila.

The unique B.C. Lions blend is made by Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»chef Ann Kirsebom who also crafts sauces called Tequi-lime (with tequila), ORumba (with rum), O Plum Sesame (with sherry), and Teriyaki Sake (with, obviously and yummily, Im sure, sake).

The club is trying to hinge the product to that final summer barbecue and hopes the sticky sauce will gain momentum for Thanksgiving, just a few weeks away. For a non-traditional bird, so great over the coals, why not?

The seasonal ploys ring hollow, however.

Whatever. The PR efforts try too hard for my taste and seem unnecessary. I love that the CFL club has its own BBQ flavour and that alone is a playful development and a wonderful nod to backyard-bound fans watching and cooking at home as well as tailgating ticket-holders.

Dennis Skulsky, Lions president and CEO, said in a prepared statement, Its a versatile sauce that can be used in so many ways. I believe it will be a favourite among fans.

Fans wholl imagine slopping the sauce on the ribs of a Roughrider, maybe.

The Lions are on a four-game winning streak and sit third in the CFL West Division with a 5-6 record. They visit Saskatchewan Saturday for a 1 p.m. start, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»time.
