The Susan Lucci of B.C. elections is taking another crack at elected office, but this time the Greens Adriane Carr wants a city council seat.
Carr, the deputy leader of the Green Party of Canada whos run in seven racesfour provincial, two federal and one school boardannounced Tuesday shes seeking a nomination to run as a candidate for the Green Party of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»in Novembers civic vote. She hopes her eighth run is the charm.
The Greens incumbent park commissioner Stuart Mackinnon is going for another term on park board, while Louise Boutin is aiming for a school board seat and Scott Andrews is targeting Electoral District A. The partys nomination meeting is Sept. 12.
Carrs election history includes failed bids in Vancouver-Point Grey in 1983, a Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»school board election in 1984, two attempts in Powell River-Sunshine Coast in 2001 and 2005, a byelection in Surrey-Panorama Ridge in 2004 and two federal elections in Vancouver-Centre in 2008 and 2011.
Carrs results varied. She captured just over eight per cent of the vote in the 2004 Surrey-Panorama Ridge byelection. I did it for the good of building the party without expectation to win, she said.
She came closest to office in Powell River-Sunshine Coast in 2001 when she placed third33 votes behind second-place finisher Gordon Wilson of the NDP.
Most recently, Carr took on Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Centre for the 2011 federal election, but landed a distant fourth place against Hedy Fry, who retained the seat, and Jennifer Clarke and Karen Shillington.
Ive come close. I have had a serious shot at winning. It hasnt happened yet, but Ive really raised the [Green] votecertainly at a provincial levelI really believe when people have a chance to vote for me as one of 10 councillors, its a much, much better chance, she said Wednesday.
The 59-year-old is pretty excited about her municipal prospects this fall.
The Greens have enjoyed spotty success in Vancouveraside from Mackinnon, former Green turned Vision Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»city councillor Andrea Reimer held a school board seat for one term from 2002 to 2005. Roslyn Cassells won a park board seat but was later expelled from the party.
Its true the [Green] successes [in Vancouver] have been recent, but I really believe that people in this upcoming election are looking for some optionssome greater choices, so I think its really good timing for a strong slate. Im well knownmy name is recognizable and so are my credentials, Carr said.
Carr lives in the West End and has a home in Gibsons. She was born in Vancouver.
