Minister of Defence and Liberal incumbent Harjit Sajjan has won the riding of South Vancouver, securing his seat against Conservative candidate Wai Young.
Young, who held the riding from 2011 to 2015, was looking for a comeback after losing to Sajjan in the last federal election, but placed second against the Liberal candidate. At the time of the 颁辞耻谤颈别谤鈥檚 press deadline, Sajjan had garnered 17.442 (41.1 per cent) of the vote compared to Young's 14,222 (33.5). 听
Young told the Courier she knew from the beginning it would be an uphill battle to beat Sajjan, who has held the riding since 2015.
鈥淚t鈥檚 always an uphill battle,鈥 said Young. 鈥淵ou just never know what鈥檚 going to happen.鈥
Sajjan was a VPD member for 11 years, based primarily in his home riding, and finished his policing career as a detective with the gang crime unit. Sajjan is also the first Sikh to command a Canadian army regiment 鈥 a reserve regiment known as the Duke of Connaught鈥檚 Own. As a member of the regiment, Sajjan participated in four military deployments: one to Bosnia and three to Afghanistan. Sajjan moved from India to Canada with his family at the age of five.
Besides Young and Sajjan, the NDP鈥檚 Sean McQuillan, 7,841 (18.5 per cent), the Green Party鈥檚 Judy Zaichkowsky, 2,375 (5.6 per cent) and the PPC鈥檚 Alain Deng, 527 (1.2 per cent) also campaigned in the riding, which has historically been a battleground for the Liberals and Conservatives, having elected Liberal incumbent Ujjal Dosanjh by a margin of only 20 votes in 2008.
Since then its representation has alternated between the Liberals and the Tories. The riding includes the neighbourhoods of Fraserview, Champlain Heights, Killarney and South Vancouver.
Young said she decided to run again after watching some of the decisions the Liberals had made in Ottawa.
鈥淚 think the really important thing for me in this campaign, and why I decided to run again, was ethics,鈥 said Young. 鈥淚n February, there was the SNC Lavalin scandal and I just thought, wow, the prime minister of Canada is trying to get away with this, and cover this up, and lied about this and if the Canadian public doesn鈥檛 see how wrong that is, then that鈥檚 an issue for me so I decided I had to come out and run again.鈥
Young called the results of the federal election, which saw Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau win a minority government, 鈥渟ad.鈥
鈥淚 tried to share the values and principles of the Conservative Party because this is not a standard we should have in Canada for a prime minister,鈥 Wai told the Courier. 鈥淪o, I鈥檓 a little sad tonight, to be honest, that this is where Canada鈥檚 at, despite all of the issues we鈥檝e had with this government. But, for some reason Canadians think that鈥檚 OK.鈥
As for her future in politics, Wai said she鈥檚 not even thinking about that now. Her immediate plans include some time off and raising her new bull mastiff puppy.
According to Elections Canada, in the 2015 federal election, Sajjin garnered 21,773 votes (48.8 per cent), Wai received 15,115 (33.9), Amanda Nijjar with the NDP had 6,230 (14 per cent) and the Green鈥檚 Elain NG had 1,149 (2.6 per cent).
