In April I wrote a Courier cover story about the Point Grey Chrysanthemum Association's efforts to keep that club alive despite a dwindling number of members.

In April I wrote a Courier cover story about the Point Grey Chrysanthemum Association's efforts to keep that club alive despite a dwindling number of members.

In April, the chrysanthemums grown by club members were still tiny shoots so I had to use photographs and my imagination to visualize just how spectacular these flowers would become. But finally their time is here and the early blooms of the chrysanthemum are ready for their close-up.

SEPT. 10 AND 11

The Early Chrysanthemum Show takes place this weekend in the Floral Hall at VanDusen Botanical Garden, located on West 37th Avenue off Oak Street. The show is open from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 10, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 11.

Also, the Turning Point Ensemble is performing two concerts this weekend celebrating the city's 125th anniversary. Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Snapshots 125 brings to life the pre-modern, modern and post-modern through musical snapshots of Vancouver's past to present day. There is a concert Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the Roundhouse Community Centre and a free concert Sunday at 2 p.m. at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. A free music symposium takes place Sept. 10 at the Roundhouse from 1 to 3: 30 p.m. Tickets for the Saturday concert ($10 for adults and $5 for students) will be available at the door one hour prior to the performance.

SEPT. 11

The grand finale of the We Love Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Festival-Global Village Day, takes place this Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m. at the University of B.C. Student Union Building. Featured events and performers include a local and international mix of the Dancers of Damelahamid, Filipino traditional performers, Chinese folk dances and live bands from Canada, Italy, Israel and the U.S.

SEPT. 17

The ninth annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival takes place Sept. 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. A highlight of this free family event is the Twilight Lantern Parade ending at Renfrew Park with a celebration that includes fire spinning, a live swing band, tea garden, moon cakes and stilt dancing. As far as I'm concerned stilt dancers are right up there with clowns, but apparently a lot of people love them because they're everywhere. The festival coincides with the first full moon of the fall and promises music and magic, two things I'm actually not afraid of.

SEPT. 18

The Douglas Park Community Centre is the location for a neighbourhood celebration Sept. 18 called Sharing Our Wealth. The festival offers rides, entertainment, carnival games and a silent auction. Kids are invited to bring their best Happy 125th Vancouver-themed Lego creations to win prizes. Because the party includes a cake-decorating contest, cake mix will be available for pick-up next week at the community centre, 801 West 22nd Ave. Participants are asked to bring their fabulous creations to the festival for display. The party runs from noon to 4 p.m.
