Support for Occupy Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»may be waning in some quarters but the B.C. Teachers' Federation continues to back protesters camped out on the north side of the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Art Gallery. The union has committed $1,000 worth of in-kind donations, according to president Susan Lambert.

"We're donating in kind. We have already and we will continue, if the Occupy movement remains, to donate in kind. We've been giving some food. We made the decision at the executive table-it was to donate in kind if the movement continues-$1,000 over time. I don't know how long that will be because we'll be taking grocery bags down over a period of weeks I suppose."

Here's what else Lambert said to Courier questions on Occupy Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Wednesday afternoon.

Courier: Does the BCTF have a position on Occupy Vancouver?

Lambert: We support the principles of Occupy Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»and all the Occupy movements. The discrepancy between the rich and the poor is growing at a faster pace here in Canada than it is even in the United States. We have in B.C. the highest level of child poverty in the country. So yes we support the principles of the Occupy movement. In my view, the principles of the Occupy movement are sustained public addressing of those situations of inconceivable wealth versus incredible poverty and the asking of our society to address those problems in a non-violent and a very peaceful way.

Courier: At any point would you pull your support? There's been some criticism about some of the protesters and the tactics.

Lambert: I think some people are trying to exploit the movement and these are people who have different values and different tactics and we don't support that. We don't support violence. We don't support that kind of aggression. We will be looking to support what we call the authentic Occupy Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»movement, which is a non-violent, peaceful movement.

Courier: But at any point would you be prepared to pull it? Your union brothers and sisters with the police force and the firefighters were not happy this week. Do you think it would get to the point where it would be uncomfortable for you to continue supporting [Occupy Vancouver]?

Lambert: I think there is a core group of Occupy Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»people who are peaceful, non-violent, and who are trying to make a very peaceful public point that we can no longer continue to tolerate the inequities in our society and we will continue to support that core group.
