If you’re thinking about adopting a furry friend consider an older cat and check out this promotion.

The BC SPCA is offering 50 per cent off the adoption fees for adult cats from July 23 to July 29.

Spokesperson for the animal welfare organization’s B.C. branch, Lorie Chortyk, says its a chance for the older cats at the shelter to find permanent homes during kitten season and free up space to bring in more animals.

Older cats are generally more low-maintenance and are litter-box trained, among other benefits. “Older cats tend to be calmer and their personalities have developed so it allows us to make the best match with their potential new guardians,” Chortyk says.

The event is sponsored by pet food company Hill’s Science Diet and applies to BC SPCA shelters across the province.

Jenn Porter, general manager of Hill’s Pet Nutrition Canada says the company is happy to support the BC SPCA through its Food, Shelter & Love program and will offer new pet owners a free bag of pet food “to make sure their new friend is well-fed and well-nourished.”

Regular adoption fees for adult cats range from $135 to $194 depending on the location.

Every year, the BC SPCA rescues 15,000 cats and kittens throughout the province. If you’re interested in adopting an adult cat visit your local BC SPCA branch and you can.
