Women in the baby boomer age group are duly affected by cancers, but, as many patients and family members know it can affect women of any age.
Look Good Feel Better (lgfb.ca) is Canadas only cancer charity dedicated to empowering women to manage the effects that cancer treatment has on their appearance and self-esteem. And on May 5, Vancouverites can help fund this very meaningful program.
Over 100,000 women have been helped through its workshop and services. At the heart of Look Good Feel Better is a complimentary two-hour hands-on workshop, in which women whose appearance has been affected by cancer and cancer treatment learn how to look and feel a little more like themselves again.
Guided by experts through the programs signature steps, the women master simple cosmetic techniques, explore hair alternatives and learn about cosmetic hygiene, nail and skin care.
Participants also take home a complimentary kit of cosmetics and personal care products.
Beauty is more than skin deep
Realizing than looking attractive, feeling self-assured and confident, and putting your best face forward is important to many women, Shoppers Drug Mart Boutique Manager Janelle Sambrook wanted to do a little extra to help the cause.
Shoppers Drug Marts across B.C. are fundraising for Look Good Feel Better on Saturday, May 5, hosting galas and in-store fundraising promotions, and Sambrook took to the task with a hands-on approach.
Were going all out this Saturday from 1 to 7 pm, with a ton of great, fun activities to raise money in support of these valiant women, says Sambrook, at her stores location on Granville St. at West 13th Avenue.
Having a female family member recently diagnosed with cancer was an impetus for Sambrook to rally the troops and formulate various methods of raising funds. I take part in the Walk to End Womens Cancers each year, she said, and my team here are all looking forward to getting the neighbourhood involved in this charitable benefit.
The cosmetic side of the event entails makeovers featuring luxurious products from Lancome, Clinique, Smashbox, Shiseido and more, and a nail technician will be offering mini-manicures.
Sambrook has enlisted the help of Blanche MacDonald students to assist with make-overs, along with her four resident cosmeticians.
For a $10 donation you can have a make-over, with $5 going to Look Good Feel Better and $5 to be used towards buying cosmetics. (Go to facingcancer.ca for more info. on the ongoing partnership with Look Good Feel Better.)
The store is also having a barbeque on the lower level ($5 for hotdog, chips and water). Wellness groups will be on hand to answer questions, and a raffle will offer a slew of prizes, including services from local practitioners like pilates, personal training, chiropractic, hair styling, spa and acupuncture and family counselling.
And, whether you are affected by womens cancers or not (and never say never), cash donations will be readily accepted!
