RING-A-LING With over 300 artists opening their studios for an estimated 10,000 visitors, the East Side Culture Crawl (Nov. 18-20 at various locations) is one of the largest visual arts festivals in the city. And while we can certainly appreciate a pretty canvas and a beautiful sculpture, we at Shop Talk prefer to wear our art. Thats why were so excited by The Ring A Week Challenge. Starting in May of this year, Vancouver-based jewellery artists Simone Richmond (top left), Jana Kucera, Patsy Kay Kolesar, Linda Read (top centre) and Heather Matwe (top right) each began producing a new kind of ring every week. They could be made out of any material and could be as crazy, bizarre, experimental, functional or non-functional as their creators wanted as long as they fit around a finger. All 140 rings will be on display and available for sale at The Onion Studio Building (1103 Union). Visit EastSideCultureCrawl.com for schedule, maps and participating artists.

DIGGING IT Students from the John Casablancas Institutes Fashion Business and Creative Arts will be rocking the runway at their graduation fashion show on Nov. 17 at the Villa Amato Ballroom (88 East 1st), 6 pm. Using mining as their muse, the Obsidian Fashion Show promises a glamourous twist on the subterranean world of canaries and pickaxes. The dark stone that is the shows namesake was fashioned into mirrors by our early ancestors, so you really dont have to dig deep to tap into a vein of vanity. Tickets $25 from JCI (220 Cambie), $30 at the door.
