TWO DOORS DOWN
Kiehls, the New York-based cosmeceutical giant whose tricky little name has been mispelled in this column several times, has moved its Robson location two doors east to 1021 Robson Street. The new space, which boasts a vibrant acrylic mural created by none other than Mr. HOPE himself, street artist Shepard Fairey, and a massive, underlit Art Deco-style awning will now offer personalized product consultations under its soigné crystal chandelier. The reason for the move: their former space will be demolished in favour of the new leaseholder, Forever 21. As if there werent enough suburban teens on the Robson Street Strip (Mall) on weekends...
POST-MAO-DERN
Founded by Chairman Maos heir apparent in 1950, Flying Pigeon was the first nationalized manufacturer of bicycles in the New China. And, thanks to a particularly stubborn streak of Communist conservatism, Flying Pigeon has hardly changed one bit in the intervening 60 years. An aesthetic blend of pre- and post-war European bike design, its streamlined-yet-retro silhouette seems frozen in amber and perfect for cruiser afficionados across North America. At least, thats what Yulu, a multi-cultural Vancouver-based advertising agency behind the new old import, seems to be betting on. For the big Western rollout, a few changes were in order, such as the addition of a womens version (pictured above) as well as leather seats and Dutch-style parallel handlebars. Even better are charming extras available to customize your ride, like a wicker basket or a picnic-perfect wine bottle carrier. Bikes are $475-$499 and available online at TheFlyingPigeon.com. Also, tonight (Thursday, July 28) marks the opening of the Flying Pigeon pop up shop in Gastown at 8 E. Cordova, 7-10pm, where you can get a first look or even a test drive.
HOMO MOGO
Gay-themed T-shirt maker MOGO Wear will be front and centre during the 2011 Pride clelebrations by donating dozens of its shirts to both queer youth resource Diversity Project and gay community outreach organization Qmunity.
