Josephine Meckseper: American Leg opened last week at the Contemporary Art Gallery (555 Nelson), and will continue until Sep. 2. For her first exhibition in Canada, Meckseper creates eight new works in the street-front window vitrines of the CAG, exploring the relationship between politics and consumerism, central to her work. Sharing the gallery until July 1 is the first Canadian solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Matthew Monahan. With their battered, weathered surfaces and contorted, fragmented bodies, Monahans figurative sculptures and drawings evoke artifacts from another time or era. Coming soon, the CAG presents a survey of film and sculptural works by Dublin-based artist Sarah Browne, including the artists entry for the 2009 Venice Biennale. Sarah Browne - How to Use Fools Gold (July 13 to Sep. 2). The free guided visits to the public provide visitors with an excellent opportunity to develop new skills for interpreting contemporary art. June 3 at 3pm, CAG director Nigel Prince gives a tour of current exhibitions whilst focusing on Matthew Monahans work. On July 1 at 3pm, curator and educator Heidi Reitmaier explores the work of Josephine Meckseper and Matthew Monahan in relationship to other contemporary cultural practices.
