"I havent learned all the technical terms some have more of a diamond cut-in, or a flat cut-in, some are skinnier as well.
So starts my introduction to the intimidating world of bow ties. I cant help but relax a little when Kari Bergrud of Belvedere admits shes sort of just winging it as well.
The self-taught seamstress got into the haberdashery business by accident. Almost a decade of wearing a tie as a server familiarized her with the cut of its jib. Then she started selling handmade jewelry at markets and loved the bustle of the DIY (do-it-yourself) scene, but not the jewelry making per se. So she switched to ties, which brings us to Belvedere: classic ties, bow ties, suspenders, pins and tie clips. Or, as she calls them, classy goods for classy gents.
Dont let the catch phrase fool you though the 1950s-inspired retro menswear looks just as good on her female clientele.
When shes not working as a fundraiser for the Union Gospel Mission on the DTES, Bergrud is bending recycled forks and spoons into vintage tie clips, assembling snappy suspenders, interfacing fabrics and hand-stitching perfect symmetry into her products.
And while the basic shape of the bow tie hasnt evolved much since the 17th century when it first debuted, Bergrud listens her 21st century clients requests choosing fabrics such as navy with a slash of orange or discrete florals and she allows herself to be influenced by the seasons.
I try to be intentional with what I do, keeping with lighter colours for spring, but including really bright bowties with a sharp colour popping.
And its working. While her products can be found at formerly female-only retailer (Main or Commercial), in her bedroom sewing studio, there is a complete lack of stock.
Im on a sewing binge right now. Ive had to start saying no to custom orders; theres just not enough time.
If the mere thought of cheeky bow ties doesnt instantly conjure images of dad, heres a tug at the heartstrings courtesy of Bergrud.
For the younger dad, its in fashion right now. Its a bit different. For the older dad, sometimes it can rekindle what once was. A lot of dads out there used to wear bow ties, but stopped because it was unfashionable. With them coming back, its allowing them to go back to the way things were and still seem cool.
If you arent well-versed, pair your new bow tie with a slightly more casual short-sleeved dress shirt the first time. As Bergrud says, no one should have to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe just to wear a bow tie. And Belvederes wide selection of patterns and prints means you arent restricted to wearing shirts in just white or grey.
Its a funny accessory, just fabric tied around the neck in a very particular knot. But I guess its just the same as a scarf or a necklace for a girl; it completes the ensemble.
And then theres that little issue... While the bow tie has been around for hundreds of years, very few of her customers have used that time to learn how to tie one.
Its very rare I find someone who knows how to tie a bow tie, but they all want a tie-your-own bow tie, she laughs. Its not something taught in our generation.
Those lucky enough to buy directly from Belvedere at this seasons craft markets could ask for them to be tied in advance, but its a good skill to learn. You receive a handy instruction sheet with purchase. Youtube is also a great resource for seeing the technique first-hand, but Bergrud has her own sources... Old school tailors. Its always the old Italian guys that teach you. When in doubt on getting a straight-shave or going to the barber Italian guy.
And borrowing again from the Italian men, the trick to rocking any fashion choice is confidence.
