Ever wondered what makes gelato different from ice cream? Or just how so much incredible flavour can get packed into a silky sorbetto? The secrets of gelato making can be easily uncovered at a new series of classes being offered by a 鶹ýӳscoop shop.
launched their Gelato 101 workshop this fall as a fun way to get people into their Kitsilano flagship location during the cooler months.
Offered weekly on Thursday evenings, Gelato 101 is a 90-minute hands-on course that will find you working alongside Uno’s gelato masters in their kitchen putting together one gelato and one sorbetto. Learn how and why they source their ingredients — including what they bring in fresh from right here in Metro 鶹ýӳand the Fraser Valley at peak season — and how they find precisely the right balance of sweetness in the mix (you might be surprised).
Test your muscle power on the big mixer, juice the lemons, measure and pour, and then watch your creation spin away to frozen perfection before you help wrangle it out with the massive paddle.
Of course, there’s a bit of downtime from when you get your batches turning in the machines, so what better time than to sit down and taste your way through the best of Uno’s gelato and sorbetto menu? Save room, though, because your class includes a pint of your choice to take home to savour later. You can choose to take home some of what you’ve just had a hand in making, or any of their flavours you fell in love with during the 10-flavour tasting.
Ideal for families, date night, girls’ night out, or a celebration, Uno’s Gelato 101 is a fun way to learn and indulge all at the same time. The classes are limited to eight people, which means you’ll get a real “small batch” experience while you’re making your small batch gelato and sorbetto.
Classes run through March 2020, and each month the class features one each of a seasonal gelato and sorbetto. Here’s what you can learn to make in the coming months:

- January: London Fog gelato / Midnight Chocolate sorbetto
- February: Chocolate Scotch gelato / Ruby Chocolate sorbetto
- March: Nutella Swirl (Chocolate & fresh roasted Hazelnuts) gelato / Mango Tango sorbetto
When: Thursday nights though March 2020 from 7-8:30 p.m.
