The Union, a new cocktail-forward southeast Asian restaurant from the same folks that brought us Habit Lounge and The Cascade, is on the verge of opening at the foot of the V6A building in Strathcona (219 Union off Main). The 2,000 sq.ft. space is very attractive, with a broad, picture-lit bar overlooking long picnic tables under large, green bucket lights. The kitchen is wrapped in wood panels, upon which the lyrics for Jimi Hendrixs Crosstown Traffic have been painted in big block letters. The 84-seater will enjoy the talents of Latitudes co-owner/chef Lisa Henderson. With Chinatown right around the corner, we can expect her to be sourcing her flavours fresh and daily. The same should prove true of the efforts from barman Arthur Wynne, an understudy of former Bartender of the Year Nick Devine. Prediction: a home run.

From 4:30 to 8pm on New Years Eve, Rocky Mountain Flatbread is offering pizza making with kids, along with balloon twisting, face painting and crafts. The celebration also includes dinner.
