Fans of author Chuck Davis, who passed away November 2010, will be interested in this event.
Especially if theyve wondered how his latest book, Chuck Daviss History of Metropolitan Vancouver, was completed posthumously, a gargantuan task completed by a group of friends, volunteers and contributors (including the Couriers Allen Garr) just in time for the citys 125th anniversary. As part of its Speaker Series, the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Historical Society presents Creating Chucks Capstone: Publishing Chuck Daviss History of Metropolitan Vancouver. The guest speaker for the event is Howard White, publisher of Harbour Publishing, who led the effort to get the book printed after Daviss death. The book has since become a best seller. The event takes place March 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Joyce Walley Room at the Museum of Vancouver.
Mountain View
Im a bit of a murder mystery geek and enjoy a good unsolved crime, which is exactly what Mountain View Cemetery is offering during its next walking tour March 25. During the tour Lorraine Irving, with the B.C. Genealogical Society, will look at the 1924 Janet Smith murder and the people associated with the unsolved case. Many of them are buried at the cemetery. Civic historian John Atkin will contribute, taking participants to the bottom end of the cemetery and the Home Section, where theyll meet the director of the Australian Genealogical Society, the captain of the former Maharajahs yacht, and a leading architect. Walking tours meet at 10 a.m. at Celebration Hall, 5445 Fraser St., enter off East 39th Avenue. Tickets are $10cash only.
Mount Pleasant
Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House celebrates its 35th anniversary with a public open house March 28. Interested folk can drop in for a tour between 2 and 3 p.m., enjoy entertainment from 3 to 3:30 p.m. and stay for the formal program (speeches) from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., followed by refreshments until 5:30 p.m. The neighbourhood house is located at 800 East Broadway. Langara
The Langara Business Association is hosting its third annual AWEAR Charity Fashion Show benefiting the Kettle Friendship Society. The show, which takes place at Langara College, will feature trendy collections from up-and-coming local designers who put a creative spin on traditional business attire for spring and summer.
The goal of the show is to not only celebrate fashion, but also change views about mental health. The Kettle Friendship Society has a focus on helping residents of the Downtown Eastside who have mental health issues. It provides more than 3,600 individuals with 26 services, transition housing for women, and more than 200 units of supported housing. One message both organizations want participants to take away from the event is that looks can be deceiving and even well-dressed individuals can suffer from a mental-health challenge.
The fashion show takes place March 27, from 6 to 9 p.m., in the Langara College Library, second floor study lounge. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from Zlata at 778-668-8019 or email at [email protected].
