A new era begins for Beaucoup Bakery. Owner Jackie Kai Ellis has sold the bakery to long-time staffers, sister and brother duo Betty and Jacky Hung. Betty Hung has been with the bakery since the beginning and has been head pastry chef for the last two years. Brother Jacky has focused on front of house and barista operations. Ellis is moving on to other projects, including the release of her debut memoir with Random House,ĚýThe Measure of My Powers.
Liquidity WinesĚýin Okanagan Falls has won big on the international stage for two of their wines. At both the Decanter World Wine Awards, the 2015 Pinot Noir Estate won the silver medal and the 2015 Chardonnay Estate the bronze. At the International Wine and Spirit Competition, the Chardonnay won the silver and the Pinot Noir the bronze. Find them at the Liquidity tasting room, online, and at various private wine stores.
The Indian Summer Festival is back July 6 to 15, with the opening gala on July 6 at the Roundhouse Community Centre. Hosted by chef Vikram Vij (Vij’s, Rangoli, My Shanti), the evening will feature food prepared by top chefs from Vij’s, Café Medina, Blue Water Café, Fairmont Waterfront Hotel, Bauhaus, Jamjar, Cacao, Bella Gelateria, and Tayybeh. Tickets $100 per person and include food and a complimentary beverage.
Zach Berman and Ryan Slater, the duo behind The Juice Truck, have launched a new cookbook in collaboration with health coach Colin Medhurst. The Juice Truck: A guide to juicing, smoothies, cleanses and living a plant based lifestyle contains recipes for nut milks, juices, smoothies, hot drinks, and plant-based dishes, as well as tips on doing a juice cleanse and info on the authors’ favourite tinctures, supplements, and more. On Sunday, Sept. 3, CinCin executive chef Andrew Richardson and his team will be grilling meats over an open flame on Robson Street in front of the restaurant. The wood-fired event is a prelude to the evening’s five-course Feast of Fire dinner. Guests will enjoy a street fire-grilling demo with tastings, followed by a cocktail reception and family-style dinner with wine pairings. Tickets $175 per person.
Chef Weimar Gomez of Yew Seafood and Bar is staging a Sunday supper series in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary. Currently featuring spot prawns through the month of June, then continuing on to crab and lobster through July and August, each three-course menu includes salad to start and a seasonal dessert, as well as boiled seafood with potatoes, grilled vegetables, roasted corn, bread and more. Tickets $150 per couple, and include a glass of CedarCreek Estate Chardonnay or Pinot Noir.
Edible Canada is holding the second in its Canadian Table Dinner Series on June 19. For this evening, chef Chris Whittaker of Forage will be creating five courses devoted to sustainable and regional foraged ingredients, paired with wines from Mooncurser Vineyards and cocktails from Wayward Distillery.

On June 20, Mamie Taylor’s will host a “Deep South Meets Down Under” dinner, featuring Australia’s Alpha Box and Dice winery. The evening will be hosted by Dylan and Justin Fairweather from the winery, and Mamie Taylor’s EC Jeff Koop will serve a five-course pairing menu. Menu includes barbecued shrimp po’boy, marinated beet salad, kangaroo tartare, Australian lamb meat pie, and pavlova for dessert. Tickets $70 per person via .
Boulevard Kitchen and Oyster Bar is launching its third annual Sunday Seafood Boil Series on June 25. The weekly family-style suppers will continue through to Sept. 3. Each weekly menu includes boiled seafood, such as prawns, clams, mussels, crawfish and Dungeness crab, paired with bacon cornbread, salad, and beignets for dessert. Tickets $62 per person, with two-guest minimum.
The Dirty Apron is holding a series of Canadian-inspired cooking classes leading up to Canada Day. Running the week of June 26, the classes include everything from global cultural influences and a mix of culinary traditions; to seasonal, local produce and iconic flavours like Haida Gwaii seafood and Quebec maple syrup. The Harmony Arts Festival is back Aug. 4-13 on the North Shore. As part of the music/food/art/literature/family event, make sure to check out two major culinary events. Best of the West on Wednesday, Aug. 9, is a food and wine pairing competition that sees 12 Lower Mainland restaurants paired with 12 BC wineries, with guests are encouraged to vote for their favourite pairing. Participating restaurants include Cactus Club, Feast, Mangia e Bevi, Terroir, Thomas Haas, Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół»Aquarium, Zen Japanese, and more. Wineries include Blue Mountain, Burrowing Owl, Haywire, Hester Creek, Laughing Stock, and Painted Rock, among others. Tickets $100. Mixology Night on the Pier on Aug. 10 sees eight of BC’s top bartenders creating signature cocktails to go with an evening of catered food samples and live music. Tickets $75.
