After a year of work, a massive piece of public art has been installed outside the new Minoru Centre for Active Living that incorporates the silhouettes of hundreds of locals.
The art piece, called “Together” by David Jacob Harder, stands several metres high and is made of steel to create the shape of an adult holding a child’s hand.
Harder began the project by meeting dozens of individuals who enjoyed Minoru Place Activity Centre, Minoru Aquatic Centre and Minoru Park. He also dug into the Richmond archives to get a sense for the city’s history.
These images and stories were then used to create silhouettes that make up the sculpture.
Check out some other photos of Harder’s process as he created the piece now standing in Richmond.
Harder is a Wells, B.C.-based artist who was born in Quesnel. His work is displayed across Western Canada and the U.S.
TheMinoru Centre for Active Living will open its Seniors Centre and Events Centre to the public on Monday at 7 a.m. The aquatics and fitness centres within the centre will open at a later date.
