Richmond hip hop crew dances its way to bronze at world championships

Freshh 2.0 will dance its final performance for the year at the Richmond World Festival on Sept. 1.

A Richmond-based dance team is celebrating all month long after recently claiming a bronze medal at the World Hip Hop Dance Championships in Phoenix, Arizona.

Freshh 2.0, from Richmond鈥檚 Fresh Groove Productions, competed against teams from 50 countries between Aug. 5 and 11. The nine Lower Mainland dancers, aged 10-12, had practised their routine all summer 鈥 sometimes for six hours a day. For one parent, the work certainly paid off.

鈥(The dancers) are so young so I鈥檓 not sure how they鈥檙e reacting to it鈥he parents are probably more excited because they understand the amount of time that was spent,鈥 said Marcos Hui, whose 10-year-old son Juno is on the Freshh 2.0 team.

鈥淲e鈥檝e been celebrating鈥ince we got back, we鈥檝e been having house parties, we鈥檝e just been going at it. We won鈥檛 stop until school starts.鈥

Hui said the team has been 鈥渁 year in the making,鈥 and first had to compete in Edmonton to qualify for the world championships.

鈥淚t was very rigorous,鈥 Hui said. 鈥淚t was great to see these kids progress so quickly.鈥

For Hui, the competition was an exciting learning opportunity for his son.

鈥淚t was really cool because were doing it with all these different languages and different people who all came together to celebrate dance,鈥 he said.

鈥淚 think (Juno) grew as a child.鈥

Freshh 2.0, and the rest of Fresh Groove Productions, will dance at its final performance for the year at the Richmond World Festival on Sept. 1.
