A real shiner: Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation shined a light on 150 years of medical excellence. Chief Adrienne Bakker welcomed 460 shiny, happy people to her fifth SHINE soiree held at the Sheraton Wall Centre. Sponsored by the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society, the RCH fundraiser netted $164,000 for an expanded cardiac care unit. Among the guests was former RCH bypass patient and B.C. Lions GM Wally Buono who escorted the Grey Cup to the sold-out, black-tie ball.
Big smiles: Yours truly played auctioneer at the Pacific Dental Conference's 12th Toothfairy Gala, sponsored by Scotiabank. Ten cakes from the city's finest pastry chefs and bakeries were auctioned off in support of the B.C. Cancer Agency and About Face, a charity helping put smiles on individuals with facial and dental abnormalities. Two cakes fetched $20,000, each adding to the $126,000 raised.

CTV's Coleen Christie emceed the stylish cocktail party to generate funds for dressing services, as well as mentoring and coaching programs, to Lower Mainland women.

Great alloy and arts ally, Rio Tinto Alcan's Richard Prokopanko presented Theatre Conspiracy's Tim Carlson with a $60,000 cheque. The group is the winner of the 14th Rio Tinto Alcan Performing Arts Award. Its new work, Extraction, will have its premiere at The Cultch in 2013.
