Capilano University is suspending all classes as it seeks to move away from in-person instruction due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

All classes at the North Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół»post-secondary institution are cancelled tomorrow (March 16) and Tuesday (March 17) in order to give university staff and instructors time to look at different ways to deliver their courses, such as moving classes online, starting Wednesday, March 18.

The move away from in-person instruction is for the remainder of the school semester, according to spokeswoman Linda Munro.

Instructors will advise their students as to the specific manner or form in which their classes will resume in the coming days. Students are asked to monitor their email accounts closely during the next several days for further instructions, she said.

Details related to exam schedules and the methods of examination delivery are also forthcoming, said Munro.

“This next two days is to be able to give the instructors time to prepare to move into this new scenario that we’re all in as best as we can,” she said.

The university will remain open durings its usual operating hours for the next few days, but no in-person classes will be held, she added.

Capilano University’s response comes after it was announced on Friday that the University of British Columbia, University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University – the province’s three biggest post-secondary schools – were moving their classes online for the remainder of the term to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

On Thursday last week, the B.C. government said that gatherings of more than 250 people should be cancelled as the pandemic surges around the world.
