new years
Looking to cut a rug this New Year’s sans kids? There are plenty of options.

’Tis the time of year when we’re confronted with fancy drinks, grossly inflated cover charges, early morning taxi nightmares and the strange term “party favours.â€

All these hallmarks of the New Year’s Eve experience can be yours as we present you with options to go gentle into that good night in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»on Dec. 31.

  • Geoff Berner, champagne and pizza at the Anza Club

  • Craft beers and cutting rugs

No self-respecting Vancouverite should have to usher in the new year without consuming some form of artisan beer. Recognizing this, the folks at CRAFT Beer Market on West First want to help. The joint’s Best of 2017 party includes the four best dishes of the last year, party favours, champagne and, you guessed it, craft beer. Ticket prices range between $60 and $80 and the evening’s menu is pre-set. Event details are online at .

  • Darkness descends on the Astoria

Oh, the ’80s. Goths, low-key loathing and synthesizers from here to Agassiz. All of those highpoints — or low ones, depending on your perspective — come to life with the Astoria’s “The Dark Eighties†party kicking off at 8 p.m. The event invite promises tunes spanning “industrial†and “dark electronic†to “dark wave†and even “minimal wave.†There’s no mention of new wave. Odd. Tickets are online at .

  • TheatreSports League gets introspective

Take some time to ponder all 2017 has given us by making fun of those very things. The Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»TheatreSports League takes to the Improv Centre on Granville Island throughout the last week of December to ponder the finer points of life in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»over the last year: affordable housing, fake news and celebrity sightings, among other things. Three shows are slated for New Year’s Eve at 7:30 p.m., 9:30 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. Tickets and info can be found at .

  • * Sauce and sass at the Rio

Longtime Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»comic Patrick Maliha emcees an evening at the Rio Theatre that is seemingly all over the place: live music, burlesque, comedy and even a Marilyn Monroe impersonator. The show’s headliner is 604 Records artist Shirley Gnome, who’ll be joined by comedy troupe the Fictionals, burlesque performer Barbara Beall and other naughtiness. There will even by fire dancing. Tickets are $29 in advance or $45 at the door. Check for details.

  • Onesies for one and all

Vancouver’s nexus for nerds is pulling out all the stops with its “A Very Onesie-ful Evening†party that finally marries pajamas and booze. Re-live the “me, me, me†decade at Vancouver’s former foremost denizen of smut. The Fox Cabaret will roll out a dual floor version of its ’80 versus ’90s dance party complete with performances by DJ Trevor Risk and Common People DJs. A comedy show by the Sunday Service kicks things off. The festivities run 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. and tickets range in price between $15 and $45. Tickets are online at .ÌýÌý

  • Party at …. Science World?

Atoms and theories around black holes will take a back seat, if only for one night, at Science World. The protractor-less party promises five bars, two rooms of music on two floors and eight DJs and other performers. Tickets for commoners start at $80, while V.I.P. packages go for as much as $2,000 (!). Dollar figures like that naturally call for a dress code: no ball caps, sneakers, t-shirts of any kind (unless worn under a blazer or suit jacket), hoodies, sweatshirts, or sweatpants are allowed. Truly an event all can enjoy. Get your tickets online at .
