New on DVD this week:
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Twelve-year-old Alexander (Ed Oxenbould) finds it hard to compete with his overachieving family, especially after he has to cut gum out of his hair and burns down the science lab. Maybe it’s the birthday candle or guinea pig magic, but when Alexander wishes a bad day on his family it’s one disaster after another. Jennifer Garner and Steve Carrell also star. Extras on the Blu-ray include a discussion with author Judith Viorst; an in-depth look at the Australian Outback party with producers, cast and director Miguel Arteta; a video diary of child actor Ed’s day on set; bloopers and music video.
Kill the Messenger
Jeremy Renner is excellent as journalist Gary Webb, the first to blow the whistle on the CIA’s coziness with Nicaraguan drug lords. Culled from bits of the truth (’90s news footage is included) but not strictly factual, Kill The Messenger tells the scary story of what happens to Webb after his ground-breaking piece runs.
The Song
A biblical intro explains the adultery and tragedy that makes Jed King (Alan Powell) the man he is. Son of a philandering country-music star, Jed starts out talented and humble, and is rewarded with the woman of his dreams (Ali Faulkner, Twilight). But before long he falls dad's pattern of fame, fortune, and temptation – in the form of his opening act, Shelby (Caitlin Nicol-Thomas). Is he doomed to follow the same tragic path as his father, or can he turn his life around? Special features include commentary with writer-director Richard Ramsey, a meet-the-cast feature, and two extras featuring author-pastor Kyle Idleman, on bringing a classic bible story to a wide audience.Â
