The city is marking the 101st anniversary of International Women's Day, March 8, with a celebration at the Creekside Community Recreation Centre. The event will honour local women in the arts from the park board's Remarkable Women poster series. International Women's Day is commemorated annually by the United Nations. People around the world gather March 8 to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women's long struggle for equality, justice, peace and development. In 1910, an International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. Clara Zetkin, leader of the "Women's Office" for the Social Democratic Party in Germany, tabled the idea of an International Women's Day. The conference of more than 100 women from 17 countries, representing unions, socialist parties, working women's clubs, and including the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament, unanimously approved Zetkin's suggestion. The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at 1 Athletes Way, in the former Olympic Village.
