The Magic Flute, West Coast style

Mozarts The Magic Flute is both a romantic story of lovers in the centre of a battle between the forces of light and darkness, as well an allegorical tale of the quest for lifes meaning, says Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Opera, which is mounting a visually stunning West Coast interpretation at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Director Robert McQueen consulted with a panel of First Nations artists about the legends and traditions of BCs coastal First Nations to provide a fresh look at Mozarts work. Coastal traditions dictate equality of the sexes, allowing McQueen to eliminate much of the language criticized as sexist in recent years, the VO says. Many First Nations contributors have played a role in set design, choreography and costumes. Sarastros followers are clothed in representative dress of BCs 10 coastal Nations and the set design represents the three planes of land, water and air central to First Nations mythology. Oh, and lets not forget the singers! Expect stand-out performances by John Tessier, Simone Osbourne, Joshua Hopkins, Phillip Ens and Marion Newman and VO mainstage debuts from Teiya Kasahara, Michael Barrett, Melody Mercredi, Leah Alfred and Sylvia Szadovszki. It is sung in English but the spoken dialogue is in both English and a dialect of the Musqueam language, projected on a screen above the stage. Evening performances are March 9, 12, 14 and 16 at 7:30pm with 1:30pm matinees on March 10 and 17. Tickets available at .

Hit n Strum

Back in November. we told you about a movie written and directed by Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»stuntman Kirk Caouette, who also stars in Hit n Strum. Its about how two worlds literally collide when a driven young lawyer (Michelle Harrison) runs into Cauoette, who plays a homeless busker, with her car. The next day, when she walks by him and realizes hes been there every day without her noticing, they begin a friendship that changes their lives. Shot in and around Gastown, it was inspired by a homeless man whose voice, and story capitivated Caoeutte. The film opens Friday, March 8 at Fifth Line Cinemas, 2100 Burrard.

There wont be a lack of girl power on International Womens Day. Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»is part of the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, a network of camps that help boost girls self esteem by teaching them how to play rock n roll. Campers form and name rock groups with impressive titles like Murder Burger, pictured learn instruments and then put on an unforgettable performance. On March 8, some campers, along with a group of Vancouvers veteran female rockers, will come together to jam out a night of cover songs. Russian Hall (600 Campbell); doors at 8pm. $10.
