Vehicles displaying B.C. veteran licence plates are exempt from parking fees at city parking meters, in EasyPark parkades and surface lots, as well as in park board-operated parking facilities for Remembrance Day week until Nov. 12. Free parking also extends to locations such as Stanley Park, Queen Elizabeth Park and the Aquatic Centre, as well downtown community centres, including Coal Harbour, Creekside and Roundhouse. The city offers the complimentary parking to recognize the military service and dedication Canadian men and women provided to the country and to help their work distributing poppies for a donation. Poppy donations support veterans with affordable housing, education and trauma relief and recovery. This year, in cooperation with the Royal United Services Institute of Vancouver, the city has upgraded a number of traditional street name signs in honour of Remembrance Day. The signs, installed on 15 streets within an area bounded by Grandview Highway, Rupert Street, Boundary Road and East 22nd Avenue, each contains a red poppy to identify that particular street is named after a person or a place that has had a role in a Canadian war. Remembrance Day services take place around Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Nov. 11. The main service is at the Victory Square cenotaph, beginning at 10: 30 a.m.
