The death of Aurora, a 30-year-old beluga whale, in Nov. 2016 was on the minds of 鶹ýӳpark board members when they decided last month to ban cetaceans in captivity at the 鶹ýӳAquarium.

鶹ýӳpoliticians have spent years debating whether the 鶹ýӳAquarium should keep beluga whales in captivity.

Will a group of passionate teenaged debaters be able to convince adults to side with their point of view in two hours?

The pros and cons of keeping whales in captivity is one of four subjects on the agenda for the "Great Debate" at the Kits Hall Community Centre on April 23. The other three topics are:

• “Free university education for Canadian students”

• “End the Canada-US Safe Third Country Agreement?” and

• “Lowering Canada’s voting age to 16?”

The event is sponsored by the 鶹ýӳQuadra Constituency Youth Council and MP Joyce Murray. It's expected to be "a fun and lively discussion that will pit CYC members against a multi-generational team of community members."

The CYC says it is a hardworking group of high school students who have been meeting throughout the year to discuss the issues that matter to them and share them with their Member of Parliament. "This debate will be a great opportunity to showcase these future leaders in a fun and interactive format with winners decided through audience participation," a press release says.

Registration starts at 2:30 p.m. and the debate is from three to five. Kits House Community Hall is at 2305 West 7th Avenue. You can register in advance .
