A total of 10 awards will be given out this spring, six toteachers, two to administrators and two to support staff.
Nominations for the 2019 Premier’s Awards for Excellence in Education will be accepted until March 31. The 30 finalists will be announced in mid-April and will be invited to an awards ceremony at Government House in Victoria on Oct. 4, held in conjunction with World Teachers’ Day.
Last year, the inaugural year, there were 188 nominations from across the province. Sandra Chan of Richmond Secondary was a runner-up in the extracurricular leadership category.
Winners will receive a $3,000 personal bursary for professional learning, a $2,000 contribution to their school community for professional learning and a commemorative artwork. Runners up will receive a certificate of recognition signed by the Premier and Minister of Education.
“I strongly encourage all community members to take the time to nominate a deserving education professional for these exciting awards,†said Rob Fleming, Minister of Education.
Awards will be given to teachers in the areas of community engagement, extracurricular leadership, indigenous education, outstanding new teacher, social equity and diversity, and technology and innovation. Awards for administrators will be given for school leadership and district leadership.
