For many people, the PNE conjures up memories of sugary candy floss, deep fried foods and the sweet aroma of mini doughnuts, followed by a healthy serving of guilt.
This year, however, the PNE will offer a variety of 15 healthy food choices to suit fair goers’ every dietary whim and restriction, whether it’s vegan, gluten-free, peanut-free, dairy-free, sugar-free or even oil-free.
According to Faizzal Fatehali, manager of exhibitor space, the PNE is responding to the needs of its customers.
“[Diet cautious food] is a trend in restaurants, so why not in fairs,” said Fatehali.
In addition to diet-sensitive foods, the PNE will offer an assortment of vegan items, tossed salads and locally grown corn on the cob. Visitors will also be able to dine on crepes, tacos and wood-fired pizza.
Gluten-free options include rice noodles from the Saltspring Noodle Bar, which also provides peanut-free and dairy free options.
Lemon Heaven offers diabetic-friendly lemonade sweetened with Splenda, while thirsty travellers can drop by the Fruit In Fruit stall, which serves fresh juice in containers fashioned from the actual fruit.
A green sticker on the stall indicates it offers healthy food options.
Of course, customers can still throw caution to the wind and indulge in the PNE’s abundance of sweet treats and deep fried diet-breakers. And only they and their conscience have to know about it.
The PNE opens Aug. 20 and runs until Sept. 5.
