How many bikes are allowed on the SkyTrain?

While there are a number of things that people shouldn’t do on Translink routes, there is some confusion about exactly what isn’t allowed. For example, people are allowed to bring their bikes onboard, but capacity is limited by which line you are on.

While there are a number of things that people shouldn’t do on Translink routes, there is some confusion about exactly what isn’t allowed.

For example, people are allowed to bring their bikes onboard, but capacity is limited by which line you are on. As such, riders are advised to be mindful that taking your bike on transit during rush hour times will also limit the capacity.

Further, Translink states that you may only take a maximum of one bike per car on the Canada Line. On the Expo & Millennium Lines, however, there is a maximum of two bikes per car.

With that being said, the rules change during rush hour. Also, SkyTrain and Canada Line staff may direct customers with bikes to refrain from boarding trains with their bikes during heavy crowding conditions.

A captured an image she describes as: “this guy was zipping through the crowds on the platform at lougheed trying to get his motorbike on the train during rush hour. He cut off about 6 people and forced his way into the train.”

The image shows a man on what appears to be a scooter, which therefore caused a great deal of commotion in the comments.

鶹ýӳ spoke to Jill Drews, Senior Issues Management Advisor, Translink, who notes that there are specific requirements for bringing mobility aids on transit in the Lower Mainland.

Specifically, she noted that the transportation provider is bound by the definition of a mobility aid in the motor vehicle act. She noted that “mobility aid means a device, including a manual wheelchair, electric wheelchair and scooter, that is used to facilitate the transport, in a normally seated orientation, of a person with a physical disability.”

As such, she notes that the moped scooter seen in the Reddit thread would not be permitted.

“Our bikes on transit policy also does not permit the use of two-wheel electric or gas powered scooters. We recommend customers who witness something like this contact Transit Police or approach a station attendant,” she explains.
