Considering its lingering anti-fun reputation, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»isnt going to be mistaken for New Orleans any time soon.
But the spirit of the anything-goes home of jambalaya, Mardi Gras and Bourbon Street is a primary influence on .
The newest addition to Granville Streets entertainment district, FanClub which opened at the end of August is a 6,500 square-foot, two-level performance space/restaurant with a 27-ft high ceiling, a bourbon lounge tasting room and its own in-house smoked meats. Antique chandeliers, French colonial doors, and a 10-foot ceiling fan add to the New Orleans ambience.
Evocative of that city as Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»FanClub may be, one of its main purposes is to showcase local talent. The owners are Joe and Waide Luciak, who also own the Yale, the blues bar that has long been a fundamental part of the Granville Street strip. The Luciaks want to bring the same, if not more, level of commitment to Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»musicians and artists at their new space as they did (and will again, once renovations are finished) to the Yale.
Theres just so much culture and creativity in this city, says Joe Luciak.
As proprietor of the Yale, Luciak has seen first-hand what he calls the slow demise of culture in our community.
Granville Street is a perfect example, he says. Everything is the same. Theres no call to action or sense of urgency. Theres no reason to go out in downtown Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»right now. There are a couple promoters and some awesome festivals but those are one-offs.
The inspiration for Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»FanClub is less New Orleans music and visual style than it is the citys freedom of speech, its outlets for culture and creativity, and how it acknowledges the best of that eclectic diversity, says Luciak.
In that spirit, Luciak says that Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»FanClub is equally open to hosting acts as diverse as blues singer Jim Byrnes and the UBC Bhangra Girls. They might be at opposite ends of the spectrum, says Luciak, but they complement each other. Thats what we want to personify.
FanClub is employing the citys beer-making talent as well, by serving local craft beers. And he and his bartenders are currently experimenting with a twist on a classic cocktail, using in-house smoked Canadian maple-infused bourbon for their own version of an Old Fashioned.
Luciaks open to ideas from local artists and musicians. In the meantime, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»FanClub has two ticketed shows scheduled, Los Straitjackets Sept. 20 and Maria Muldaur Sept. 30. VancouverFanClub.ca
