Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Fire & Rescue Services has a few important tips to ensure everyone has a happy and safe holiday season:

. Smoke alarms save lives, so press the test button on your smoke alarm once a month to ensure it's working. If it has a battery, change it once a year and if your smoke alarm is more than 10 years old, it's time to change it. Smoke from a fire can hurt or kill you long before flames ever get near you. Protect yourself by sleeping with your bedroom door closed and make sure to shut children's doors too. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher and learn how to use it. The fire department recommends an ABC type extinguisher.

. If you have a fresh cut Christmas tree, water it regularly to help it retain its moisture. Artificial trees should be fire retardant. Be careful when you're using a ladder to install and remove Christmas lights. Before installing lights, inspect them for excessive wear. If you doubt the age and safety of the strand of lights, get new ones. Don't forget to be power smart and purchase energy-efficient LED lights. Use only approved CSA and UL tested extension cords and power bars for electrical needs. Keep candles away from combustible materials and never use lighted candles on or near a Christmas tree. Don't leave your home or go to bed with candles burning.

. Don't leave pots unattended on the stove and be cautious when cooking with oil. So far this year, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Fire and Rescue Services has attended 278 kitchen fires, most of which could have been prevented. Keep flammable items at least three feet from space heaters and ensure heaters are CSA or UL approved.
