FORE THE HOMELESS:For more than 125 years, First United Church has been a caregiver for the most vulnerable residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. A bastion of support for street people, the ministry recently hosted its ninth Golf Tournament for the Homeless, sponsored by BMO and Deloitte. Elizabeth Kerklaan, Joanne Barker, David Klimpton and Bob Burrows steered the yearly tourney and charity dinner, while yours truly and Rick Cluff emceed. The sun shone on 144 players who hit the links for a day of golf and camaraderie. Hitting the greens to make some green, golf enthusiasts generated more than $50,000 to address the challenges of those facing homelessness.Ìý Monies raised will help provide basic necessities such as meals, storage, toiletries, pastoral care and emergency clothing.

MEAL SERVICE:The B.C. Hospitality Foundation was created 10 years ago to support hospitality workers in times of need. The organization, in partnership with Wine Australia, fronted its seventh annual Dish and Dazzle event, a spectacular night of food, wine and craft cocktails in support of workers and scholarships for those looking to pursue a career in the hospitality industry. A capacity crowd filed in to the Parkview Terrace for the epicurean extravaganza featuring wines from 30 Australian wineries, and tasting plates by some of the city’s top chefs. The evening also featured a cocktail competition that saw six bartenders shaking up drinks with a Down Under theme. Zachary Lavoie of the Diamond took top honours, but the biggest winner of the night was the hospitality foundation — attendees tipped out more than $40,000 for the charity.
