PARTY ON THE PIER: Peace Arch Hospital was the beneficiary of the inaugural Picnic on the Pier. Community builder Landmark Premiere Properties fronted the special evening on White Rock Pier. A lucky 200 snapped up tickets to the outdoor party — a magical night featuring a long table alfresco dinner set against the stunning backdrop of the sun sinking into the Pacific Ocean. Along with a delicious dinner, the program included a cocktail reception and live entertainment. Yours truly served as master of ceremonies. Before the sun would fall behind beyond the horizon, Ray Chen, Landmark president, presented Siobhan Philips, chair of the foundation, with a cheque for $38,300. Proceeds will go towards the hospital’s $15-million effort to refurbish its emergency room for the growing “City by the Sea.â€

POLO PARTY: Southlands Riding Club hosted the third annual Pacific Polo Cup. Always a posh party, the day of polo and people watching drew competitors and a fashion-conscious crowd for an afternoon of fun and fundraising. Nadia Iadisernia and Craig Stowe once again staged the yearly day of riding in support of the club’s ongoing efforts to bring the sport of kings to riding enthusiasts of all ages and abilities. Tournament chair Benson Hurlbutt welcomed a record crowd to the festivities, which included two thrilling polo matches and the traditional divot stomp at half time. Four teams competed. Team Land Rover would eventually hoist the coveted Cup, but as always the real winner was the riding society, which looked to raise upwards of $50,000.

ROLLING THE DICE: Looking to attract a younger demographic to support its ongoing efforts of caring for kids with special needs, Variety, the Children’s Charity has partnered with Vancouver’s maestros of fun the Social Concierge for a special night to celebrate the organization’s 50th anniversary. One Night in Monte Carlo will take place Nov. 5 as the River Rock Theatre pays homage to one of the most famous and enduring casinos in the world. Classic interactive games of chance make for a glamorous evening that will include a mash-up of entertainment over a multi-course dinner. With a goal of raising $250,000, proceeds will benefit Variety’s Sunshine Family Van Program. The event was announced to supporters at the firm’s annual boat party.
