STRIKING GOLD: Chef Mark Filatow of Kelowna's Waterfront Restaurant a Wine Bar bested nine of B.C.'s finest culinary talents to win the prestigious Gold Medal Plates competition. The culinary cook-off hosted by kayaker Adam van Koeverden attracted 1,000 guests to the Westin Bayshore Hotel for the Canadian Olympic Foundation's marquee event. West's Quang Dang and Maenam's Angus An earned silver and bronze respectively.
HEART STRUCK: The Giving Hearts Awards program recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations that exemplify the true spirit of philanthropy. The awards were handed out at this year's National Philanthropy Day Luncheon presented by Scotiabank. CityTV's Dawn Chubai emceed while legendary Canuck Trevor Linden provided the keynote. Courier publisher Dee Dhaliwal presented the small business award to Maureen Sullivan's Thomas Hobbs.
WINE CRUSH: Co-owner of Summerland's do-it-yourself Okanagan Crush Pad winery, Christine Coletta has been busy crafting wines for her house labels Haywire and Bartier Scholefield. The licensed winery designed to facilitate production of multiple small lots of wine from different sources is getting the attention of aspiring wine producers. In 2011, her crush pad processed 17,000 cases of their own wines and a growing fan base that includes Edible Canada's Eric Pateman and his newly released Market Red.
