Children’s author ‘s cancer battle is bringing supporters together.

Diagnosed just this August with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL), Mac underwent rigorous and immediate treatment at 鶹ýӳGeneral Hospital, including receiving two units of blood per day at the hospital.

That demand for blood generated by Mac alone inspired the East 鶹ýӳresident to urge those around her to donate blood. Taking it one step further, Mac’s longtime friend Morgan Brayton, a local actor, comedian, and fellow parent, has coordinated a blood drive event for Oct. 14.

Called “For the Love of Carrie Mac, Give Us Your Blood!” the event has had so many people sign up to donate blood that they are already planning a follow-up event for this January that will have expanded hours so that more people can participate.

Brayton also plans to run these drives quarterly, and will continue to raise awareness of the value of and constant need for blood donations.

For this Saturday’s event, although all the slots are booked, organizers say anyone wishing to show up to lend support is welcome to do so. In fact, if Mac is feeling well enough, she may also join in the celebration.

For the Love of Carrie Mac, Give Us Your Blood! takes place Saturday, Oct. 14 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at Canadian Blood Services clinic, 4750 Oak St. in Vancouver.
