Cycle BC hosts fundraiser to kick colon cancer in the butt

When Conrad Medve and his girlfriend, Tasha Noble, realized his step-dad since age two was coming up on five years cancer-free from colorectal cancer treatment, they decided that sitting idly by was not an option.

When Conrad Medve and his girlfriend, Tasha Noble, realized his step-dad since age two was coming up on five years cancer-free from colorectal cancer treatment, they decided that sitting idly by was not an option.

Their boss, owner Doug Turner of Cycle BC Rentals and Tours, who turns 60 later this year, is not just a family member but a great guy who went through the ringer six years ago. After surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, Turner came out on top.

We wanted to not only honour Dougs five years, but we thought this was a perfect opportunity to bring awareness to the potentially fatal diagnosis of colon cancer, said Noble, who is marketing director for Cycle BC.

After some quick organization, Noble and Medve found a beneficiary for their fundraising, Colon Cancer Canada, and also a venue to hold a fun party that would offer an opportunity for friends who care about him to celebrate with Turner.

On Friday, July 15 from 7:30 pm to 2 am, Cycle BC Rentals and Tours is throwing a party for customers, friends, sponsors and the community at the Forum Sports Bar, 1163 Granville. Tickets are only $10 with entire proceeds going to the cause and that gets you a free beer before 10:30 pm. There is also food available for sale.

There will be a silent auction, again with all proceeds going to Colon Cancer Canada in honour of our owner who is nearing his five year mark cancer free, said Noble proudly. Weve got amazing things to bid on, including a trip to Whistler, an Okanagan resort holiday, tickets to sports and concerts and a deluxe wine package.

There will also be a 50/50 draw, door prizes, plus beer pong, a deejay and more, according to Noble. Plus, attendees can win a free full day scooter rental for two. Medve and co-manager Mike Gat can also tell you all about their bicycles, scooters, motorcycles and electric bicycles to rent at Cycle BC.

To purchase your tickets, visit either Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»location of Cycle BC Rentals (6th and Quebec or Waterfront Coal Harbour) or call 604-709-5663. You can also email [email protected] to reserve your ticket, or buy at the door.

If you cant make it out last-minute to this fun event, you can still do your part by looking after your health with awareness, diligence and action. And if you want to make a donation, go to www.coloncancercanada.ca, or donate to any of the B.C.-based cancer charities.

So get off your butt, and help the cause!

Colorectal Cancer (CRC) Fast Facts:

The National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) acknowledges CRC as the third most common cancer and the second most common cause of death from cancer for both Canadian men and women.

Yet CRC is a highly treatable cancer if it is detected early and it is up to 95 per cent preventable with timely and thorough testing or "CRC screening". Unfortunately as it stands today, nearly half of those diagnosed find out too late.

Colorectal Cancer by the Numbers:

- 423 Canadians, on average, are diagnosed with CRC every week.

- 175 Canadians, on average, die of this disease every week.

- One in 14 men is expected to develop CRC during his lifetime and one in 27 will die of it.

- One in 15 women is expected to develop CRC during her lifetime and one in 31 will die of it.

- Anyone 50 and up should be screened, regardless of family history.
