The municipality of Whistler has officially proclaimed Feb. 5 to 12, 2012 as Pride Week. GayWhistlers 2012 WinterPride event marks the first time in its 20-year history the popular gay and lesbian ski week has been officially recognized by the municipality. And while there will be lots of parties, workshops and skiing in Whistler that week, Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»will play host to an exhibit depicting highlights of the past 20 years of whats known as Gay Ski Week.

Jan. 19

A look back at 20 years of WinterPride is described by GayWhistler as, A retrospective of 20 years of ski week and its reflection of the evolution of gay culture and its visibility. (What more is there to say?)

The celebration brings together past and present volunteers and supporters of Gay Ski Week Jan. 19 at Affinity Auto, 1918 Fir St. from 6 to 8 p.m. This is an opportunity for Gay Ski Week alumni to reconnect, trade stories and hear a retrospective on the past 20 years. In case youve been living under a rock, the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline is a hot topic of debate everywhere you turn. If approved, the pipeline will move oil from the oil sands of Alberta through B.C. to the Pacific Ocean where tankers will transport it to points abroad.

Theres a plethora of information out there being offered by both sides of the debate, but if you want to hear from the anti-pipeline community theres an event this weekend at the Roundhouse Community Centre. I havent heard from anyone in favour of the massive proposal, which means I have no events to promote on their behalf.

Oil Free Coast: Tankers and Pipelines, Protecting and Preserving our Land, includes speakers from Coastal First Nations and Tanker Free B.C., as well as MP Nathan Cullen, former environment and natural resources critic for the NDP.

Admission is free. Childcare will be provided if needed. Doors open at 1 p.m. at the Roundhouse followed by live music at 1:30 p.m. and the panel discussion from 2 to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be offered from 4 to 5 p.m.
