Are you ready for your close-up? The Kerrisdale Community Centre hosts an old-fashioned variety show called Entertainers Front and Centre and the producer is looking for talent of any genre. (Yes, even stilt walkers.) The show is April 13, but auditions are being arranged now. If you're the next big MC, guitarist, juggler, gymnast, singer or Tahitian fire dancer, contact the show's producer Angel Drummond to arrange an audition. Dance, vocal and music schools are encouraged to recommend an act to represent them. This show is a great opportunity for performers of all ages to try out new acts or material. Contact Drummond at [email protected] for more
information.

This item isn't about a public event, but instead marks a community milestone. Beauty Night is celebrating 11 years, 16,000 makeovers and more than 500 volunteers with a special event Feb. 13 at the Downtown Eastside Centre on Columbia Street. Beauty Night was founded by Caroline MacGillivary to raise the self-esteem of women living in poverty by offering makeover services, including hair, makeup, nails and foot care. This event has been dubbed "Red" in honour of Valentine's Day Feb. 14. During the event, dozens of women from the Downtown Eastside will receive a makeover compliments of Beauty Night and its sponsors for that evening, including individual donors LUSH, B.C. Hydro and Wear Those Deals.

Cupcakes. Now that I have your attention, the third annual Cupcake Throwdown takes place Feb. 16 at The Chapel in the Downtown Eastside. More than 20 bakers from across the city will go head to head in a vicious battle for cupcake dominance. Maybe more delicious than vicious, but either way, the public is invited. For $10, attendees will receive five tasting tickets and an opportunity to vote for the best cupcake creation. More tasking tickets can be purchased during the competition. All proceeds benefit H.A.V.E. Culinary Training Society, an organization that provides foodservice job training and work opportunities to residents who experience barriers to employment. It gets better-the Cupcake Throwdown is child-friendly, wheelchair accessible and licensed. The Chapel is located at 304 Dunlevy and the throwdown takes place from 7 to 10 p.m. For more information, visit cupcakethrowdown.com.
