Its the fifth anniversary of the West End Cleanup, which means Timbits for all, so long as you agree to pitch in and help paint over graffiti while picking up garbage along the way. Meet at the cul-de-sac off Bute, just past Hamburger Marys on Davie Street, May 12 at 9:30 a.m. rain or shine. Grandview-Woodland
Turn to the Sun is hosting its eighth annual Sunflower Seedling Sale May 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2133 East Seventh Ave. All proceeds go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation in support of HIV/AIDS grassroots projects in Sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to the sale, volunteer growers, including students from neighbouring elementary schools, nurse the sunflowers from seed to seedling. There are 30 varieties of sunflowers available for sale.
Also happening in Grandview Woodland is the 17th annual Stone Soup Festival: Connecting Our Local Food Community, which takes place May 12 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Britannia Community Centre, 1661 Napier St. at Commercial. As in the past, the goal of the festival is to raise awareness of issues around food security, the benefits of sharing resources, and eating local. This years festival includes a farmers market, food vendors, artists, community groups, talks, workshops, live music, childrens activities and of course, free soup.
Langara College
The Canadian Peace Initiative is hosting a public talk on Bill C-373, an Act to Establish a Department of Peace in Canada, May 5 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Langara College. Individuals and groups are invited to make written or oral submissions of five minutes to the three peace commissioners taking part. Heres a great inspiration for cleaning out those closets or starting your annual spring cleaning. The thrift store benefitting the Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children is hosting a yard sale and is looking for donations. The sale takes place May 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine. Meanwhile, the thrift store accepts donations Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Also for sale this year will be refreshments and snacks, with proceeds going to the health centre.
