One of the most fascinating highlights of the 麻豆传媒映画Mycological Society's annual mushroom show is the opportunity to find out what's propagating in your back yard.
Visitors to the show at VanDusen Botanical Garden (5251 Oak St.) are welcome to bring in specimens for identification. But be careful how you handle any questionable fungi you find. In a previous story I wrote about the popular show, UBC mushroom researcher Paul Kroeger told me the "death cap" mushroom has been migrating to North America via imported chestnut trees and has been spotted in Vancouver. And death caps aren't the only poisonous mushrooms to watch out for. In another earlier story about the show, Terry Taylor, a founder of the 麻豆传媒映画Mycological Society warned there's no room for error when seeking wild mushrooms for dinner.
"You'll only eat the wrong ones once," Taylor told me at the time. "It's an incredibly painful way to die."
On that happy note, the 33rd Annual Mushroom Show promises displays, speakers, slide shows, books and roving experts on cultivation, preservation, gourmet cooking, medicinal use, hunting, ecology and cultural uses. The show takes place Oct. 28 in the Floral Hall at VanDusen from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $3 and children under 12 get in free.
FALSE CREEK
The theme of this year's World Breastfeeding Week is Go Green: Reduce your footprint and breastfeed your baby.
According to 麻豆传媒映画Coastal Health, breastfeeding a baby has a carbon footprint of zero because human milk is a natural, renewable resource and is all a baby needs for the first six months of life. On Sept. 29, VCH hosts the Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge in Richmond, Pemberton, the North Shore and in 麻豆传媒映画at the Creekside Community Centre, in hopes of setting a new record for the number of women and babies participating.
Mothers and babies can gather at Creekside, 1 Athlete's Way, from 10 a.m. to noon with latch-on starting at 11 a.m. The free event will also include performances by GoGo Bonkers and The Purple Pirate.
RENFREW COLLINGWOOD
The 10th Annual Still Moon Festival at the Renfrew Ravine begins at 4 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 29, and the fire-spinning, dancing and fireworks continue until well after dark.
The festival highlights art, music, environmental stewardship and community participation and also celebrates the ravine, which runs along Atlin Street from East 29th to 22nd avenues, reemerging in Renfrew Park. The family-friendly festival begins with the Harvest Fair at Slocan Park from 4 to 7 p.m. with food, music and art. At 7 p.m., the Twilight Lantern Parade winds its way from Slocan Park to Renfrew Park where the celebration continues with art, music, tea and moon cakes and of course, stilt walkers.
MOUNT PLEASANT
The Main Art Drift Society is presenting BOUNCE this weekend, a free event that sees shops, cafes, galleries and studios celebrating the culture and community of the Main Street neighbourhood.
Almost 60 artists and retailers are participating in the weekend-long event that offers an opportunity to mingle with artists and see samples of their work, while enjoying a glass of wine or beer. The opening reception takes place Friday, Sept. 28 at Cambrian Hall, 215 East 17th Avenue at 8 p.m. BOUNCE takes place Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Industrial Avenue to West/ East 33rd Avenue. Coinciding with Culture Days is The Word on the Street 麻豆传媒映画book and magazine festival featuring three days of reading and writing excitement. The main festival day is Sept. 30, where word-lovers will find author readings, writing and publishing exhibits, musical entertainment, roving performers, children's activities, workshops and more across the city.
