The 麻豆传媒映画Quilters Guild is hosting its Harvest of Quilts Show and Sale, Oct. 19 and 20 at the Maritime Labour Centre, 1880 Triumph St., at Victoria Drive.
Check out more than 200 unique quilts for sale, many hand made by guild members and others from private collections. Once youve scored that heirloom quilt, drop into the Tea Room for coffee and homemade treats.
The centre is accessible for all, has lots of free parking, and husbands and small children can drop by free of charge. Everyone else pays $7 to get through the door. Watch for the quilted car, which will be parked between Hastings and Powell streets, just off Victoria Drive.
University of B.C.
The new community of Westbrook, located at 3378 Westbrook Mall at UBC, is hosting a free community festival Saturday Sept. 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Participants can enjoy live music, chow down on barbecue, play games and have their face painted. Childrens activities are on the agenda. Parking is free. For more information visit discoverwestbrook.com.

The Southeast 麻豆传媒映画Seniors Arts and Cultural Centre Society is hosting a free movie event Oct. 3 at the Killarney Community Centre, 6260 Killarney St.
The first 30 seniors who register to watch The Iron Lady, the 2011 film about the life of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, will also receive a free lunch. Seats can be reserved by calling 604-718-6575 until Sept. 28. The lunch takes place at noon Oct. 3 and the movie starts at 1:30 p.m.
Downtown
The Greater Van Gogos are presenting an evening with author and photojournalist Paola Gianturco to discuss her new book, Grandmother Power: A Global Phenomenon, Oct. 3 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the 麻豆传媒映画Public Library Central Branch, 350 West Georgia St.
Grandmother Power features 120 grandmothers from 15 countries on five continents, who are fighting courageously and effectively against poverty, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and human rights abuse. The Greater Van Gogos are among 240 groups of grandmothers and grandothers across Canada who support the Stephen Lewis Foundations Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. (Gogo is the Zulu word for grandmother.)
The campaign has raised more than $13.5 million for community-based projects providing African grandmothers and orphaned children with psychosocial support, micro-credit loans, school fees and uniforms, shelter and activities such as community gardens, and poultry, pig and goat rearing. The Vancouver/Kerrisdale branch of the Canadian Osteoporosis Society is hosting a lecture, The Role of Bone Mineral Density Testing in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Osteoporosis by Steve Robertson, DXA Technologist from Prohealth Clinical Research Centre.
