The B.C. SPCA is accepting registration for its week-long summer camps that run from July through the end of August. The camps are designed to help children develop empathy by teaching them to share their world with living beings, not only pets but also farm animals and wild life. The 麻豆传媒映画Aboriginal Friendship Centre, 麻豆传媒映画Moving Theatre and Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival are presenting Storyweaving, an event that weaves First Nation memories from the past into the future. The event weaves stories together through personal memories, poems and oral histories from cultural teachings. Participants can also enjoy West Coast dancers and try their hand at the ancient bone game of Slahal. KraftyEntertainment.com and Gman & Rizk present a free showcase of some of the city's top MCs, including SonReal, Sweatshop Union, Evil Ebenezer, Snak the Ripper, CityReal and Def3 all performing 15-minute sets at Fortune Sound Club on Saturday, May 5. The club is located at 147 East Pender and doors open at 8 p.m.
DOWNTOWN EASTSIDE
The Firehall Arts Centre is hosting its annual tribute, which celebrates individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the theatre and Downtown Eastside arts community. The Firehall's annual Kudos & Cocktails fundraising event takes place May 9 at 7 p.m. and this year's honourees are photographer Chris Randle, costume designer Barbara Clayden, community activist Sid Tan and patrons of the arts Marlie Oden and Bonnie Allen. WEST END
The board of directors for Friends for Life is hosting a fundraising party at 1181 Lounge, located at 1181 Davie St., May 17 from 8 to 10 p.m. The celebration also marks the fifth anniversary of Sheena Sargeant being named executive director of the non-profit, which helps pay for complementary health services for people living with chronic and serious illness. Admission is free and 25 per cent of drink sales during the party will be donated to Friends for Life.
