Cloverdale
This event doesnt take place in Vancouver, but I know a lot of city slickers will be interested regardless. And it allows me to run a photograph of a cowboy in this space, something that has never happened before. The 66th annual Cloverdale Rodeo and 124th Country Fair returns this May long weekend with a blend of rodeo action, free-with-admission entertainment, live performances and fierce competition.
The worlds top-ranked cowboys and cowgirls will compete for $300,000 in cash prizes in four main events, including Saddle Bronc, Bull Riding, Bareback and Ladies Barrel Racing categories. Additional competitions include Mutton Bustin, the 35th Annual Bed Race, the Lumberjack Show and new this year, the Cloverdale Cowboy Cook-Off BBQ Competition and World Freestyle Round-Up skateboarding competition. And to keep the party going well after sundown, the World Famous Longhorn Saloon will provide daily entertainment with performances by Ken McCoy and more. Did I mention there will be cowboys? Across the city
M&Ms Meat Shops across Canada are firing up the grill Saturday May 12, with a goal to raise $1.5 million for the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of Canada. Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»franchisees and volunteers will be flipping burgers and hot dogs to help raise the money, which will be used towards research into inflammatory bowel disease. Watch for a BBQ near you.
Kerrisdale
Its time to break out your tiara and practise your best wave. The Ryerson Memorial Centre is hosting the Royal Jubilee Games Party June 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. Bring your poker face to smash the competition at Bridge, Whist and a variety of board games. Desserts, coffee, tea and juice will be served. This all-ages event takes place at the centre, 2195 West 45th Ave. For more information or tickets call 604-266-5377.
Dunbar
According to the Dunbar Residents Association web page, this event is the worlds longest garage sale.
Since my partner and I downsized recently, Ive been banned from attending garage sales, but I might have to sneak over there anyway.
The Eight Annual Blenheim Street Bazaar takes place Saturday May 26 from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and includes 35 households between West 16th Avenue and Southwest Marine Drive. If its raining, some households may go ahead with the sale while others will postpone it until Sunday. This event was organized by the Blenheim Neighbourhood Group. Early birds will be forced into the dunk tank at the Dunbar Salmonberry Days Fair, which runs the next day, Sunday May 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at West Memorial Park at the Dunbar Community Centre.
